In this post, I will analyze the Sony Xperia 1 IV. Though some people call it the Sony Xperia 14, but I prefer the initial. Sony released this flagship smartphone on the 11th of June, 2022 with great and new features. I will analyze its price in specific countries around the world which includes; the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Spain, Malaysia etc. Firstly, let’s check out its review and features.

Sony Xperia 1 IV unboxing: what is in the box?

The first thing we are going to look into is what you should be expecting when you open the box of this smartphone. The first thing you will meet is the phone itself, a sim ejector, warranty card, and user manual. Unfortunately, Sony Xperia 1 4 did not come with a charger or cable. If you need a charger, I will advise you to go for XQZ-UC1 fast charger and a USB type C.

The Sony Xperia 1 IV has a very familiar tall flat and slim design which is very similar to last year’s model, but this time all the color schemes are matte. The matte black finish looks nice, and it does a good job of hiding fingerprints and smudges. Both the back panel and the aluminum frame are flat and they meet at a sharp edge that provides some extra grip. Like last year the front is protected by shatter-resistant Gorilla Glass Victus and now the back has Victus as well making the build overall a bit sturdier.

Just like before the new model is water resistant with both an IP 65 and an IP 68 certification. Another feature that is returned is the fingerprint reader built into the power button but it’s larger now. It’s always on and very fast. It has a dimension of 165 x 71 x 8.2 mm and is available in Black, Violet, and White colors.

Coming to the screen, Xperia 1 IV comes with a 1644 x 3840 pixels resolution which is pretty much the same as last year at 6.5 inch OLED with a 120-hertz refresh rate and an impressive 4k resolution. Even though this screen is identical specs-wise Sony claims that it is brighter this time around and we confirmed that in our tests. On the Sony Xperia mark three the panels’ max brightness was different between the manual slider and auto mode and you’d get different max brightness ceilings depending on your color profile.

But the Xperia 1 IV can provide over 600 nits maximum regardless, the most we measured was 680 nits. That’s more than enough for good sunlight legibility but still a bit behind the competition. The Xperia one mark 4 panel is one of the sharpest around 643 ppi. The 4k resolution isn’t always active though.

The phone will fall back to an extended Full HD resolution for most day-to-day use to save energy and then output in 4k for a limited set of tasks such as video playback. Anyway, the picture is crisp, clear, and in contrast. Sony Xperia 1 mark 4 is HDR 10 Video certified, but there is no Dolby Vision support.

It does have a new real-time HDR video drive, which can upload user content to HDR, and it supports 10-bit color as well. That’s over 1 billion colors. The color settings are pretty much the same as we’ve seen in a recent high-end experience. The Creator mode is very accurate and can adjust the display colors between sRGB and DCIP.

The default standard mode in this Sony Xperia 1 IV is punchier overall. There’s also a toggle for auto-creator mode in the standard mode, it’ll kick in for certain content, giving you the best of both worlds. On top of that further tweaking of the colors is possible within the white balance menu. If enabled, the phone uses 120 hertz most of the time unlike some competitors in one dial-down to save energy, it will go back to 60 hertz only within certain apps or for video playback.

There is support for high-framerate gaming though, you can enable the 120-hertz display for supported titles through the game enhancer settings. You can also force it to 120 hertz on a per-game basis just to be sure. Within the given answer, there’s even a 240-hertz option so that’s what Sony calls blur reduction and it uses frame interpolation to reduce blur within 120-hertz mode.

When it comes to the refreshing rate on the Song Xperia 1 mark 4 we did encounter one annoying issue, if the phone heats the 120-hertz mode is actually automatically disabled, dropping you down to 60 hertz and 60 FPS.

Now coming to the cameras, Sony Xperia 1IV has a triple camera setup which is similar to the mark threes, but the telephoto has been updated and they’ll provide seamless optical zoom. Last year you got to fixed magnification levels and you again see through selections at 3.5 times and 5.2 times but there’s also continuous optical zoom for everything in between.

Also, all cameras now support steady shots with the flawless eye. That’s a result of the improved stability in low light conditions. Eye Autofocus and real-time object tracking are now available across all cameras to the three cameras on the back which include; a 12MP main camera, a 12MP telephoto, and a 12MP ultra-wide camera.

There’s also a TLF camera for bulking as well as an RGB IR sensor for white balance adjustments. During the day the main camera takes outstanding photos that are incredibly detailed and noise free. The sharpness is well-balanced and fine details and foliage have a natural-looking rendition.

White balance is spot on here and the colors are true to life. We did an image range that is also praiseworthy, and wide but not over the top. There is no dedicated portrait mode but the pictures taken in this mode are good though the subject separation is far from ideal, despite having a TLF camera to hell.

With a telephoto camera at 3.5 times, you get a decent amount of detail with these photos artists sharpened, the colors match and you can get a natural rendition of dynamic ranges when the quality goes down the more you zoom in at 5.2 times the photos are softer and a bit noisier.

You also get some purple fringing around some objects in the Sony Xperia 1 mark 4. But still, these are good with enough detail and you can get great colors.

The photos taken with the ultra-wide camera in the Xperia 1 IV are impressive as well. With abundant detail and good sharpness in the center. The rendition is again incredibly natural with great-looking foliage. Noise is low and the colors are true to life. The dynamic range is excellent for this sort of camera.

It’s worth noting that although the ultra-wide has autofocus, the focus distance isn’t close enough for this camera to be used for macro shots. Sony doesn’t do night mode, but they would argue that the Xperia 1 4 doesn’t need and that may be true, at least for the main photos we took at night are incredibly realistic, sharp, and colorful.

There was a ton of resolve detail and again the natural rendition is unmatched. But in immigrants, it deserves praise most of the time. Some demanding scenes do have a few quick highlights. When zooming at night, well-lit scenes come out lovely. They’re sharp and detailed with excellent color saturation, good exposure, low noise, and better-than-expected dynamic range in darker situations.

The photos come out darker and they have considerable clip highlights. They still have excellent renditions. LED photos taken with the Sony Xperia 1 IV ultra-wide camera are solid. They’re detailed and sharp with good noise reduction, realistic colors, and unacceptable then in print. They are a bit on the darker side, that mode could have really helped you.

For selfie use in the Sony Xperia 1 IV, it has a new 12-megapixel front-facing camera, which is even capable of 4k video recording. The subject is always well-exposed in the selfies with incredible detail and sharpness low noise and spot-on colors. All of the rear cameras can shoot in 4k and up to 120 FPS.

Footage from the main camera is impressive with enough detail and the same natural-looking rendition as the stills the noise is quite low and there’s a decent dynamic range that you may see some loan highlights from time to time. There’s a new mode this year called Why didn’t emigrate? It combines multiple frames to provide a boost in contrast and shadows look more natural. The clouds and white objects aren’t blown out either.

The Sony Xperia 1 mark 4 is best to use on a tripod because there is no electronic civilization with this mode off. We really liked the 4k video shot with a telephoto camera at 3.5 times zoom. We are detailed with Allen sharpness, low noise and a natural look in an image range is great and the colors are spot on the 5.2 times on video is softer and less detailed.

It is more than usable. It’s colorful and has a wide dynamic range. But when it comes to resolving detail and sharpness, those are lackluster. The 4k video shot on the ultra-wide camera is excellent for this sort of camera. There’s more detail than most Ultra wides outstanding processing and natural sharpness and you also get accurate colors low noise and good dynamic range.

In low-light situations footage from the main camera is usable. It offers enough detail on whether the exposure is okay and whether the colors are true to life. There is noticeable noise but its tolerable low-light videos from the zoom camera are noisy, but there’s a decent level of detail underneath so these videos are rather usable. The low-light 4k videos from the ultra-wide camera are also usable.

The Xperia 1 mark 4 Performance: CPU and GPU

The Sony Xperia 1 IV comes with Octa-core (1×3.00 GHz Cortex-X2 & 3×2.50 GHz Cortex-A710 & 4×1.80 GHz Cortex-A510) CPU and Adreno 730 GPU, It’s operating system is Android 12 with Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (4 nm) chipset.

This ties into the phone’s thermal management for this Snapdragon 8 gen one chipset. The Sony Xperia 1 IV has the most powerful Android hardware, but the performance is limited because it throttles quite heavily. After just 10 minutes of testing. The Xperia 1 mark 4 went down to about 65% of Max CPU performance, and the GPU output was cut in half.

That sounds bad but there’s so much power there, to begin with. And even with the throttling game still run well in the dip in performance isn’t that noticeable. And the phone never got uncomfortably hot while we were using it. But it’s still the Xperia 1 4 handles thermals and throttling worse than any of its competitors.

Back to the game enhancer. The Sony Xperia 1 IV has two main interfaces. The first is a game hub slash launcher through which you will find the performance profiles that you can tweak for each game.

The second interface is an overlay that you can open in-game which is like what you’d find on the previous model with features like focus settings which can silence certification as well as gaming and there’s HS or heat suppression power control. With this, you can plug in the phone to provide just enough power to play your game without charging the battery in the process as this creates more heat.

The Sony Xperia 1 IV comes with 256GB and 512GB ROM with a general 12GB RAM. As of the standard of the UK/European model, the internal memory of this phone is 256GB and a micro SDXC card is installed with support for cards up to 1TB. The US version is built with 512GB of internal memory.

Coming to the battery, the battery the Xperia 1 IV has a 5000mAh battery, which is 10% larger than last year’s. The battery life is better, it was able to score an endurance test of 100 hours and our proprietary tests. Is like this year, Sony actually is taking clues from Samsung and Apple and we don’t get a charger included in the box.

There’s support for 30 watts of USB power delivery charging, and with the session adapter, we were able to charge the phone from zero to 47% in half an hour. This result is in line with the competition. The phone also supports wireless charging and up to 15 watts. The Sony Xperia 1 4 interface is quite similar to other recent experiences.

Other Features of this phone: Speaker and sensors

You will get a regular 3.5-millimeter jack for plugging in headphones for your audio. The Sony Xperia 1 mark 4 also offers a pair of four-stage front-facing stereo speakers. The speakers are slightly louder than on last year’s model, earning a score of good on our loudness test. The sound however is deeper and richer with a noticeable boost in the bass.

The new feature of this speaker is dynamic vibration. You can enable it next to the volume controls and it allows the phone to vibrate along with the sound of your media, which is pretty cool.

The sensors this phone comes with include; Fingerprint ( which is on its side-mounted), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, barometer, compass, and color spectrum.

Its downside is that it doesn’t come with a charger and its fingerprint scanner struggles to pick up your print, people also complain about its high and expensive price.
