Surface Duo 2 body design and build
This phone from Microsoft was officially launched on 22nd September 2021, with awesome color and design. This shiny, new dark-colored phone, provides an answer to Microsoft’s nightmare.
Actually, I have some initial impressions on this phone, which I think that this device and all Microsoft has done to it has revealed that this idea may not really have a great future and maybe fundamentally flawed in the way it’s used.
Microsoft went through and valiantly improved a ton of stuffs about this current Microsoft Surface Duo 2. They found a lot of flaws they made in its previous version, but now they are all objectively better. I will really commend that lots of changes have been made, which are objectively better than the last one.
They are not nearly as thin as the displays you’ll see on modern smartphones, however, because you still need space above the displays to accommodate a sturdy metal hinge that connects them. It has a remarkable sense of durability, thanks to the metal reinforcement that runs all the way down the back of the phone to the point where the two screens come together. The fact that it never felt anything other than solid and durable throughout all of my testing is a applause to the engineering that Microsoft has put into it.
So there are really a bunch of stuffs here, it has all-new high-end specs inside. Microsoft has made the displays bigger and faster with thinner bezels. And they added a set of real cameras on the back and there’s much better software implementation to tie it all together. But yet this surface duo has a completely new set of problems that the previous surface duo didn’t have, for example, the bump camera at the rear does not allow the phone to be held firmly and comfortably when operating with a single hand.
Microsoft Surface duo 2 display
They’ve really done a lot with this new display in this duo 2. So first of all, it has a slightly bigger 8.3 inches corner to corner display with nearly the same size footprint because the bezels are smaller all the way around, especially at the top bezel.
And this display is also now brighter up to 800 nits and it is a high refresh rate because it comes with a 90-hertz panel. One downside of this display is the absence of an option to change the refresh rate anywhere in the display settings. That is, you can not get down to 60 hertz if you want to, nevertheless, everything is smoother, especially while scrolling.
But the main new thing here with this display is the curves present over the edges in the middle near the edge from both sides. So, it kind of gives this sort of subtle waterfall look. The dual screens now have this effect of looking closer together almost like it’s one giant folding screen. And this definitely encourages you to span apps across both displays more often and treat it like one big display.
The only problem with that is when you do lots of important pixels in the middle of the screen, is an issue because they are now just spilling over that edge into being unreadable but also some are completely missing. Actually you can’t read whatever is supposed to be in those middle few pixels. So any pictures or any text that are supposed to be in the middle of the screen are now just gone, which is beyond annoying. It’s a bit of a problem for any sort of reading and you can forget about spanning games horizontally.
The Duo 2 cameras: new camera bump
The Microsoft surface duo 2 has real cameras on the back and it got a whole triple camera system, a 12MP primary, plus a 2x telephoto and a 16MP ultra-wide all stacked into this camera bump that has matte rails around the outsides. There is a flash next to an HDR portrait mode and optical zoom like these cameras. They’re not amazing, but they are way more capable.
But, obviously Microsoft never really wanted to bolt cameras to the back and ruin theirs like perfectly clean, sleek, thin design. That’s why they didn’t do it with the first one and they got the great hardware. But then that meant taking pictures of stuff. You’d have to flip it open and use the selfie camera like that. And then it was just a webcam. So this time, there’s a set of real cameras on the back.
They’ve caved and done it and I can confirm they’re all better than the webcam was. So having some optical zoom has the ability to take decent video. The 2x telephoto, which isn’t that great, but it’s something but now that they’ve made this change, which a lot of people including me, were wondering if they would do it or not. It turns out that this is now a bit more annoying to use.
So obviously with this bump sticking out at the back, you’re now unable to fully open the surface out to flat anymore. So anytime you use it with one hand folded back it’s got to be slightly open just a few millimeters short of going flat which is enough to be easy to slip your finger in and close it quickly. But it is not as comfortable to use for a while and hold it with one hand.
Now I do admire that they’ve shaped this camera bump to match the exact angle that the back screen folds over and touches it so that it leaves flush. Just a neat little couple of degrees adjustment there. It’s nice it feels like there are also magnets in here to hold it against that camera bump. But now, as you’ve noticed, that’s covering the cameras which mean anytime you want to take photos with this new surface duo 2 you will have to swivel it down because closing it up covers the cameras so now you have to open it fully every time you take pictures.
When it comes to video, the Microsoft surface Duo 2 is able to record up to 4K footage at 60 frames per second. A more popular use case is recording in 1080p at 30 frames per second, where optical image stabilization (OIS) on the main lens helps to stabilize video with a lot of movement.
Microsoft Surface duo 2 performance: storage and processor
Under the hood, the original Surface Duo had several significant flaws that Microsoft has addressed in the newest version of the Surface Duo. Although Qualcomm has introduced two flagship chips since the Snapdragon 888 that powers the Duo 2, it continues to deliver the top-level performance that tab users have come to expect from the company. In addition to that, it already includes 5G connectivity, which is a feature that Microsoft was unable to provide in the first version.
The performance is expected to be quite good thanks to the inclusion of an Adreno 660 GPU and 8 GB of RAM in all of the models. It’s not an issue for the Duo 2 to handle fundamental use cases like web browsing, instant messaging, and social networking, but the experience of switching between multiple tabs is what especially pleased me with this processor. Even the most resource-intensive applications can coexist without a hitch. The smartphone also comes in variants such as 128GB + 8GB RAM, 256GB + 8GB RAM, and 512GB + 8GB RAM.
Surface Duo 2 gaming performance
The display is one of the flaws of gaming with this tab, Imagine trying to aim something with the cross hairs missing now is the surface duo. So horizontal gaming isn’t really a huge thing. This is actually a great form factor for split gaming like this emulator games, all that sort of stuff. And that’s actually one of the biggest I’ve had a little bit of time to play with this game passes on this device and it’s a lot of fun.
Coming to processor gaming performance, Even the most complex games available in the Play Store operate seamlessly on mobile devices, demonstrating the excellent performance of Google’s mobile operating system. During my testing, I did not experience any notable slowdown or lag while playing Call of Duty: Mobile, Asphalt 9, or FIFA Mobile. During these activities and while it is charging, the rear of the Duo 2 will grow warm to the touch very quickly; nonetheless, this is not much more than a slight discomfort though.
Duo 2 tab battery performance
Battery life and charging are important parts to be discussed in this review of the Microsoft Surface Duo 2. Microsoft equipped the Surface Duo 2 with a battery that has a capacity of 4,449 mAh, which is a significant increase from the power pack that was contained in the first-generation Surface Duo, which had a capacity of 3,577 mAh. This was done to meet the power requirements of 5G. When we put the Surface Duo 2 through our battery test, in which we had the phone continually browse the web at a brightness of 150 nits until the battery dies, we did not see a significant improvement in the battery life of the device as a result of this.
The first time we tested the Surface Duo 2, we only used one of its screens. The result, which was 9 hours and 47 minutes, is about par for the course when it comes to smartphones. When using the phone with both screens on, the amount of time the battery could last was cut to 7 hours and 38 minutes. This drop of little more than two hours is comparable to the performance of the original Surface Duo that we evaluated when we were looking at smartphones.
Microsoft surface duo 2 pen cover
This phone comes with a pen which is magnetically stored and charged. This magnetic feature also helps to protect Surface Duo 2 while charging. This cover and soft-touch bumper keep your pen close at hand for note-taking and sketching with exceptional accuracy.
